Matter of is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and works within the intersection of urbanism and societal challenges. Established in 2020 by recent architecture graduates, frustrated with the current discourse and lack of action on the major crises facing the world. The same crises which have shaped our education and formation as architects and urbanists – the environmental crisis, increased inequalities, and the recent pandemic, just to name a few.
The collective represents a new generation of architects and urbanists, which would like to challenge empty promises of the past. Working cross-disciplinary and within non-traditional formats, the collective is organized as a non-profit, egalitarian, and democratic organization.
Lovisa Volmarsson and Simen Sorthe graduated from Urbanism and Societal Change at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, with projects encompassing scenario-based ecological imaginaries for the future of Lofoten, Norway, and the establishment of a radically new queer typology in Copenhagen, Denmark, respectively.
As founding members of the collective, they aim to establish a platform for collaboration and exploration – not shying away from asking tough questions or proposing radical ideas and solutions, while exercising humble and respectful curiosity.
